Larry Cherubino’s accolades as a winemaker are almost too numerous to name. After a number of successful assignments in Australia, NZ, South Africa, Italy and the US, Larry began making wines under his own label – beginning with a single wine – in 2005. Since those humble beginnings in the spare room of his property in Frankland River, Cherubino has become one of the most awarded winemakers in Western Australia, now making wines from vineyards across the Great Southern, Pemberton and Margaret River.
Today, we are highlighting a wine from Larry’s top-shelf Cherubino range, or as Larry calls it “our top 1%”. Handmade with great attention to detail throughout the entire viticultural and winemaking processes, Larry believes the wines in this series represent the very best work of the winery. The 2018 'Budworth' Cabernet Sauvignon is an outstanding representation of one of Western Australia’s flagship varietals. The fruit comes from the spectacular 2018 vintage (9/10 rating) and was hand-harvested and hand-sorted from several vineyards in the Frankland River region. The wine underwent 6 weeks of maceration prior to maturation in a variety of oak barrels and barriques.
“Red plums and mulberries are delivered in bright, pure style here with dark, violet florals. Then there’s a wealth of savory notes, such as cedar, gun flint and cloves. It is so complex already. The palate delivers a very convincing array of purple-berry and plum flavours that completely coat the mouth. So harmonious, the resolve, depth and purity this wields is so impressive.
