Sumptuous Barolo from Fabio Oberto

For both collectors and even casual wine enthusiasts, Barolo continues to be one of the most consistently rewarding investments in the global wine market. Its noble quality has very few equals, with genetically high levels of tannins, abundant structure and acid that ensure long-term ageing potential and the development of its famously complex and nuanced characters, most commonly described as "tar and roses", often accompanied by leather, violets, chocolate or figs.

Synonymous with the Piedmont region, Nebbiolo is responsible for a range of wines of distinction under other DOCG appellations as well. But it is the specific microclimatic characteristics and soils of Barolo that make the Nebbiolo grown in this unique terroir the most precious and sought after of all. The region’s unusually long streak of consistently rated vintages since the early 2000’s has also served to keep Barolo in high demand.

The 2017 ‘La Collina di Dionsio’ Barolo comes from one of our favourite boutique producers in Piedmont. Hailing from La Morra, one of Barolo’s most significant communes, Fabio Oberto's wines have developed a reputation for expressing a purity in style that is truly reflective of how well they are matched to the fine terroir of La Morra as well as his talent as a winemaker.

In the glass, the wine displays pretty aromatics of strawberries and dried red berries. Earthy subtones add layers of complexity and depth. On the palate, this is a complex wine, with fine tannins, medium to full body, with delicious juicy fruits and a lingering finish. For those with patience, continued cellaring will certainly reward, however, this is a wine that can also be appreciated now.
